Whilst training with the England team Theo Walcott told reporters that the Gunners are now title challengers thanks to the signing of Mesut Ozil

Arsenal attacker Theo Walcott has backed his manager Arsene Wenger and believes that the signing of Mesut Ozil proves the club are serious Premier League contenders.

Walcott who is something of a veteran at Arsenal these days, after eight seasons with the club, was commenting as he trains with the England team ahead of World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine this week, he said:"It definitely shows a statement that we are ready to step it up.

"We had a disappointing start to the season, but we have bounced back and it is looking fantastic now.

"With the likes of Ozil joining the club, it is only going to boost everyone."

The Germany playmaker was the biggest star to arrive in the Premier League as he completed a £42 million move from Real Madrid on deadline day.

In doing so he became Arsenal's fourth signing of the window following Yaya Sanogo, Emiliano Viviano and the re-signed Mathieu Flamini.

The disappointing start to which Walcott refers was after Arsenal lost their opening game of the season at home to Aston Villa, since then however they have reached the Champions League group stage and beat rivals Tottenham 1-0 in Sunday's North London derby, and his comments suggest that Walcott feels the addition of Ozil will only improve the team further.

On bare statistics, Ozil was a revelation at Real Madrid, last season he netted nine goals and assisted a further 16 goals, he will be hoping to continue in his good form and is in line to make his Arsenal debut when they travel to Sunderland on September 14.
