It's not what you think, Lionel Messi is Barcelona through and through, but in an announcement yesterday he is offering support to Madrid, perhaps not in the way you might have thought.
The four-time Ballon d'Or winner and arguably the best player on the planet has thrown his weight behind the Madrid 2020 Olympic bid as we head towards the nominations stage.
Messi sees the importance of Spain hosting another major sporting event as vital to a crippled economy and it is thought that with his marketing value, the bid would be boosted just like when David Beckham played a key part in winning London the games last summer.
As he trains with the Argentina's squad during the international break, he was seen draped in a Madrid flag at a promotional event and later the 26-year-old posted on the bid's official Facebook page: "I am with Madrid 2020."
Spain last hosted the Olympics in 1992 when Messi's current home of Barcelona had the honour and with the games proving so valuable to the host nation the news of his support for his adopted nation will be most welcome.
The winners will be announced on Saturday in Messi's native Argentina, and competition is fierce with three cities in the running to be named as the hosts, the other candidates are Istanbul and Tokyo, both of whom offer attractive packages, but there can be no doubt that the Argentine superstar will add even more glamour to the Madrid bid.
The three bids have been through an arduous process fending off other bids to get to the final stage including, Rome, Baku (Azerbaijan) and ominously... Doha (Qatar).
