Speaking to the press just a short while ago, Ander Herrera admitted he was flattered by an approach but that he was happy at Athletic Bilbao, and is not hung up on missing out on a move to Manchester United.
Ander Herrera admitted he was bemused by the way his potential last minute move to Manchester United turned out but admits that neither he, nor his representatives met with the club.
In a press conference moments ago, Herrera broke his silence on one of the stranger transfer stories of deadline day saying: “The club is much bigger than me, that’s why I haven’t said anything or been in front of the press.”
As for the representative that turned up to pay the contract release fee the Athletic Bilbao midfielder he just smiled and said: “I don’t feel manipulated by Manchester United, how can I, I appreciate that a club like them came in for me, I appreciate their interest and also what Bilbao value me at.
“Me nor my representatives never reached any agreement with Manchester United, those lawyers who turned up at the LFP were not my representatives, I have no idea who they were.”
The 24 year-old who has made 61 appearances for Bilbao since his move from Zaragoza in 2011 appeared flattered that he had been on David Moyes shortlist but remained loyal to his club, he said: “I don’t feel bad that United dropped their interest in me, I just feel flattered that the champions of one of the biggest leagues in the world wanted me.”
His loyalty to Bilbao was reflected however when he told the press: “The president told them what they had to do, pay the clause.
“I think the club acted perfectly, they did what they said they would, they don’t negotiate, that’s the club.
“I feel very valued here, but if clubs want to speak to me I’ll always listen.”
Herrera was part of the Spanish under-21 side that lifted the 2011 European Championship and it is thought that he would have made a big impression with his maturing knowledge of the game and his vision to carve open defences with his accurate passing, in some quarters many believe that he may have been the replacement for Paul Scholes that United have been looking for.
