A round up of the key news stories this morning about Liverpool.
Glen Johnson has been withdrawn from the England squad for the latest round of World Cup qualifying matches.
The right back has been suffering with an ankle problem, which he picked up after colliding with Manchester United’s Patrice Evra in the derby match last weekend.
The club are yet to release a timeframe where they expect Johnson to return to training and then to competitive matches.
Meanwhile, manager Brendan Rodgers has countered the comments of midfielder Lucas yesterday, urging everyone connected to the club to keep their feet firmly on the ground.
Lucas suggested there wasn’t any harm in getting a bit carried away with Liverpool’s perfect start to the Premier League season and the impressive signings the club has made this summer.
“We won’t be getting carried away. We have got to continue to improve. Initially we want to try and get into the top four and be in that conversation as long as we can,” said Rodgers.
Former Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld says he turned down a late approach from Liverpool in order to join Atletico Madrid.
Liverpool had been linked with the Belgian defender for much of the summer but he’s revealed that the club’s interest came after he’d made his mind up that he wanted to move to Spain.
However, Liverpool went on to complete deals for Tiago Ilori and Mamadou Sakho so missing out on Alderweireld wasn’t a huge blow.
