Liverpool latest: Including Alderweireld snub and Skrtel vow

A round up of the latest news stories connected to Liverpool.

Former Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld has revealed he turned down the chance to join Liverpool late in the transfer window to complete a move to Atletico Madrid. The defender has suggested that the Spanish side may more of an effort to convince him to sign.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho says he put the interests of Victor Moses first, agreeing to let him join Liverpool on loan. The forward and winger has said he’s looking to use his spell at Anfield to turn around his career. Mourinho has also suggested that Chelsea will be looking to keep him.

However, former Liverpool favourite John Aldridge has suggested that once Moses’ loan deal expires, he won’t want to leave the club. He suggests that Chelsea have shot themselves in the foot loaning out one of their best young players to what he considers to be a bigger club.

Another of the club’s new signings Tiago Ilori has been promised help settling into life at Anfield by Liverpool youth star Joao Carlos Teixeira who played with Ilori for Sporting Lisbon during the 2011 NextGen series where the Portuguese side defeated Liverpool.

Brendan Rodgers has been handed further words of encouragement from one of his players, with Martin Skrtel vowing to fight for his place despite the arrival of Ilori and Mamadou Sakho earlier this week.

“There has been no contact with other clubs because the Liverpool management told me that they were counting on me. That is why a transfer was never in my plans,” said the Slovakian.

Former Liverpool midfielder Steve McMahon has suggested that Luis Suarez remains a risk to Brendan Rodgers all the time he’s still a Liverpool player.

“You don't know whether you can trust him. If he had the opportunity to jump ship, do you think he'd do it? The obvious answer is yes. He's just biding his time. He wants to get another good season under his belt and then he'll see,” McMahon told TalkSport.

Suarez is likely to go straight into the Liverpool first team as soon as he’s available following that ten match suspension, with indications he’ll be used as a winger. Rodgers reportedly doesn’t want to move Daniel Sturridge from his central attacking role due to his good form this season.

Suarez is expected to return for the League Cup tie against Manchester United at Old Trafford which has been confirmed for September 25.

The striker has also dismissed speculation, similar to what McMahon suggests, that he is looking to leave Liverpool in the future, insisting that he closed the issue over his future weeks ago.
