Chelsea latest: CL squad announced - no Essien, Mou on loans, Eto'o

All the latest news and views from Stamford Bridge.

With the prospect of international fixtures at the weekend rather than club action, news has naturally diverted from deadline day mania to previewing the World Cup qualification group games in Europe.

At Chelsea, though, there is still club news to report with club boss Jose Mourinho hoping that the media can now lose their obsession with the transfer window and focus on football.

'I think it's time for everyone to stop talking about selling and buying players,' the club's official site quote the charismatic Portuguese to have said. 'There are always little things to do on the last day, people to leave. We have to think about the club, but we also have to think about what is best for the players individually.

'We decided Moses and Lukaku - two players we were more than happy to keep - that it's better for the club and the future of the players if they go on loan. With Lukaku, we have Fernando [Torres], [Samuel] Eto'o and Demba [Ba]. Of course he would get playing time, but it's the choice of playing basically every weekend.

'He had lots of clubs and options, and we have to respect his decision.'

Lukaku's latest club manager, Roberto Martinez, has already been impressed by his temporary signing: 'It's going to be really exciting to see Romelu developing and growing and if he can do that in an Everton shirt, he's going to bring a lot of smiles to all our fans. He's still a young man but he's got everything.'

UEFA published the 23 names Jose Mourinho supplied to represent Chelsea in Champions League action, with the only notable omission being Michael Essien. New signings Marco van Ginkel, Andre Schurrle and Willian all feature.

Chelsea, meanwhile, released their squad numbers for this season and late recruit Samuel Eto'o will have 29 stitched into his back.
