Arsenal signed Mesut Ozil in a club record deal, beating off reported interest from Manchester United in the player.
It was claimed early on deadline day that Manchester United were interested, with SkySports claiming via his agent that the club had made an approach.
United then denied this, claiming had no interest in the player.
But here's a conspiracy theory in keeping with United's disastrous summer in the transfer market...
- After being linked with him for a fortnight, United decided at the last minute to make an approach.
- Ozil's agent told them "Too late, he's off to Arsenal."
- United denied ever making a bid to save face, as a PR exercise so to avoid headlines about being beaten to a deal by Arsenal.
It's just a theory, and there are of course reasons why United do not need Ozil - Shinji Kagawa being a principle one.
But in keeping with the Red Devils' poorly managed transfer window to date, it would not be surprising if it was the case.
