Liverpool's transfer deadline day review - Finishing the summer as they started

A good transfer window means a good deadline day for Liverpool.

Liverpool’s transfer business on deadline day pretty much summed up their whole transfer day. Having got most of their business done early on in the window, they got a lot of business done early on in the day yesterday as well.

Previous business had included signing Simon Mignolet, Luis Alberto, Iago Aspas, Kolo Toure, as well as moving on Andy Carroll, Jonjo Shelvey, and Jay Spearing along with giving the likes of Suso an opportunity to go out on loan and get a bit more experience.

The club’s deadline targets included Tiago Ilori, Mohamadou Sakho and Victor Moses and Shay Given, they managed to get what you would regard as the most important three.

The Reds’ are in need of cover at centre-half and they have a ready-made player in Sakho to slot into the back four, and one for the future in the highly rated Tiago Ilori. They have added more attacking threat, all be it on a short-term basis with Victor Moses on loan for the season.

In terms of outgoings Liverpool managed to ship out forward Fabio Borini on loan to Sunderland for the season and with the striker not getting any real game time at the club, it is a good move all parties, as manager Brendan Rodgers has said they will keep a close eye on the Italian’s development.

Another good move in terms of outgoings is Daniel Pacheco, after several loan spells away from Anfield it was about time he was let go. AD Alcorcon is the destination for the Spaniard as he looks to get his career up and running.

The one they missed out on, Shay Given. Will Brendan Rodgers lose any sleep over that? I doubt it. Liverpool do have a covering goalkeeper in Brad Jones, though Rodgers may be a little more reluctant to use him in cup games this season and opt for the first choice Mignolet.

Liverpool have had some ambitious targets during this transfer window, including the likes of Diego Costa and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, there were talks about Liverpool making an enquiry to take Chelsea’s Juan Mata to Anfield – though that might have been the silliness of deadline day, if not then it signalled Liverpool’s ambition even further.

There was also no late move from any club for Luis Suarez, as the Uruguayan ends a turbulent transfer window at Anfield after spending much of the time talking about moving to a club playing in the Champions League. It's a real coup for Liverpool to keep hold of him.

There is a quote from the late, great Bill Shankly that can some up this transfer window for Liverpool: “Aim for the sky and you'll reach the ceiling. Aim for the ceiling and you'll stay on the floor.”

On the face of it, Liverpool did aim for the sky, and reached the ceiling. A very good transfer window.
