In between, Arsenal defeated Spurs when it mattered, winning 1-0 in the Premier League fixture at the weekend thanks to an Olivier Giroud goal.

Tottenham subsequently confirmed the sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for a world record £85 million, which appeared to trigger Arsenal's blockbuster deal.
