Arsenal have officially announced the signing of one of the best players available on the summer market.
'We are extremely pleased to have signed Mesut Ozil,' those are the words Arsenal fans have been longing for all summer… a player of international repute, an elite-level athlete who can change games on a weekly basis and a high-profile name has finally been delivered by Arsene Wenger.
The Frenchman, speaking on the club's official website, added: 'He is a great player, with proven quality at both club and international level. We have watched and admired him for some time as he has all the attributes I look for in an Arsenal player.
'I have said throughout the summer that we have been working hard to bring in top quality players to this football club. This has involved many many people across the club and I have always had the full support of the club in making decisions on the football side.'
The seeds of a top quality recruit were planted at the beginning of the summer, when Ivan Gazidis declared that Wenger had the luxury of a £70m transfer budget that had since been strengthened by a further £10m thanks to a heavy export business that included the sales of Andrei Arshavin and Gervinho, amongst others.
The Emirates Stadium club, though, were frustrated by numerous targets. Gonzalo Higuain joined Napoli, Liverpool were reluctant to do business with the Gunners over star striker Luis Suarez and a Real Madrid trio of Angel di Maria, Karim Benzema and Ozil seemed like territory too alien for the club to tread.
However, a £42.5m bid changed all that. Real accepted the fee, the player agreed personal terms, passed a medical examination in Germany and will now link up with his new team-mates after international duty.
'Mesut is a top quality footballer who will be a fantastic addition to our talented squad. We are all looking forward to him joining up with us after his international matches with Germany and working with us as an Arsenal player,' concluded an excited Wenger.
Gazidis added: 'This is an exciting day for all of us. We have signed a world-class player who is one of Europe’s brightest young talents.'
Arsenal are going to announce the player's squad number on their official Twitter account.
