Arsenal fans would have woke up with a spring in their step anyway after the North London derby triumph, but would have been dreading the deadline day reports - considering the clubs lack of progress in the market this summer.
But over night The Gunners faithful were given great news - as various news outlets reported that a €45 million agreement was close between Real Madrid and Arsenal.
Arsenal have been linked with several Real Madrid players this summer, but now that Los Blancos have snapped up Gareth Bale with a world record transfer they are said to be open to letting one of their midfielders leave.
Ozil was on the bench for the game with Athletic Bilbao on Sunday and according to Spanish paper Marca the bid has been accepted and Real are keen to move the player on before 11pm tonight.
But the report does not stop there, as it goes on to claim that Ozil will not leave Madrid this summer.
‘’Mesut Özil has decided to stay at Real Madrid. The German did not want to leave the club despite Florentino Perez has reached an agreement with Arsenal to transfer it for 45 million euros. Tonight closes the transfer market and the Madrid wants to leave, but the player and his father are not representative for the work.’’
That would back up the claims from Ozil on Wednesday when he said:
"I have a contract with Real Madrid and I am staying here. I want to be successful. A lot has been written in the media about other teams but I have the coach's confidence and I feel very good. Also, I have a contract until 2016. I have a very good understanding with all my team-mates and it is a pleasure and an honour to play for Real Madrid."
Marca may receive plenty of stick in the UK - but they are the mouthpiece for Real Madrid and usually have very good contacts inside the club - so there will be an element of truth in this report.
A deal could certainly be forced through for the player if Arsenal are persistent, however the good news if Ozil is adamant on staying is that they have learned of the news early - and can establish new targets.
