Two years ago the idea of Daniele De Rossi leaving AS Roma would have been laughed at off the cuff.
De Rossi joined the capital club in the year 2000 and is currently one of European football’s longest serving players.
Last summer however it was Manchester City who were keen on bringing him away from Roma - and the deal at one point looked odds on.
But in the end the love for his club stood strong, and he stayed with the Giallorossi:
"I'm staying here, I feel good here, and I never asked anyone to leave. What I promise everyone is the day I want to leave Roma to win the Champions League or make more money, I will say so in public. For me it's important to say my piece. I am here at Roma, I'm happy and never asked to leave."
But the 30-year-old fell out of favour with manager Zdenek Zeman last season, and found himself out of the team - with his frustration boiling over with a red-card in the Rome derby back in November 2012 - after he punched Stefano Mauri in the face.
But when it comes to the Roma Ultras, their most impassioned fans, there are two things the hierarchy and manager simply cannot do while in charge at the Stadio Olimpico - and that is belittle De Rossi or Francesco Totti.
In the end Zeman was sacked and De Rossi seemed happy again - and this summer the appointment of Rudi Garcia has comforted fans and players at the club that Roma are going in the right direction.
And while losing Erik Lamela is a blow they have snapped up Adem Ljajic, Kevin Strootman and Gervinho this summer - so are going places.
But that did not stop United being heavily linked with the 91 caps Italian international. But nothing will come of it.
Now it has been confirmed by Roma sporting director Mauro Baldissono that he is going nowhere:
‘’We will not accept any offers for De Rossi and he has no intention of leaving. He is part of club’s history.’’
So De Rossi is officially off the agenda - with Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera the main targets for the day.
