There’s a very good reason that several Liverpool fans may be praying for Jim White to call time on the current transfer window.
Liverpool reacted brilliantly this morning to complete deals for central defenders Tiago Ilori and Mamadou Sakho but that may have inadvertently increased the chances that Daniel Agger could be vulnerable to a late bid from Barcelona.
With Gareth Bale being unveiled at the Bernabeau, it’s not impossible that Barcelona may want to react and a late bid for Liverpool’s Danish centre back could well be on the cards before the deadline this evening.
Agger has been linked with the Spanish giants throughout the summer but the club have remained firm in their stance that he’s not for sale and the player has reiterated that he doesn’t want to go unless the club want to sell him.
It would be very unlike Barcelona to blink at such a late point but if Gerardo Martino does feel as though he wants a little bit of cover in defence with his current squad of players, Barca do have the resources to be able to push a late deal for Agger through.
He’s certainly a defender who would add a great deal of strength and passion into the back four of any side and a player who certainly wouldn’t look out of place in La Liga and Champions League football.
The biggest stumbling block to that sort of deal would be the superb start to the season Liverpool have made because if a silly offer was accepted late in the day, Agger may still turn it down on the basis that Liverpool could end up having a cracking season and possibly challenging for the title.
For it to happen, Barca wouldn’t be able to mess around, they would have to bring an above market value offer to the table, the sort of offer that Liverpool would consider despite the fact Agger is one of the club’s most important players and has declared his love for the side numerous times.
They would also be taking a risk on relying on the faith Brendan Rodgers has in his new signings considering he’s never seen them play Premier League football before.
It would be different if Ilori and Sakho both had a couple of seasons under their belt at Premier League offer because if a stupid offer came in for Agger at short notice, it would be far easier for the club to accept.
They could also potentially sweeten the deal with a loan offer for one of Barcelona’s emerging stars, with Liverpool having been linked with several throughout the summer.
Martino has hinted that he will give the current Barcelona crop of players the chance to rectify many of the mistakes we saw from the team’s back four last season, especially in the Champions League.
However, he’s human, just like every other manager currently tied up trying to do various deals for players before the window is closed before January. If he dangles a huge carrot, will Liverpool bite?
