Cabaye is a player Arsene Wenger has been very public in his admiration of but if the Gunners are forced to go cap in hand to Newcastle United later today their pursuit of Mesut Ozil could backfire on them in several ways.
As things stand, the Gunners are trying to do a deal for Real Madrid’s German star and with Manchester United out of the running, they are free to try and pull off that transfer.
However, if it doesn’t come together then Arsenal will more than likely be on the phone to Newcastle who could make life very difficult for the Gunners as they compensate looking to sign Cabaye.
The first problem with going back to Newcastle is Arsenal would have already shown their hand.
Newcastle will have the back up option they crave and they are well within their rights to demand any sum of cash they want for the player because they’re not under pressure to sell and Arsenal need to get a deal done if Wenger wants another midfield option.
The other problem with the Gunners going back for Cabaye is it tells the player himself that he’s subsequently the fall back option for failure to sign Ozil.
Fair enough, Arsenal have already tried to sign Cabaye but that was at a time when Ozil’s availability was sketchy to gauge and when Gareth Bale hadn’t already moved to the Spanish capital.
It could have a mental impact on Cabaye who will question why the Gunners didn’t go all out to try and push a deal through for him in the first place.
Another implication it will have will come from the fans who may see any subsequent move for Cabaye as a panic buy after not being able to pull off a deal for a big name European player.
Plenty of Arsenal fans have questioned the signings that the Gunners have made already this summer and several more will question why the club would settle for Cabaye over the possibility of trying to sign another big name play this January or next summer.
Newcastle and Cabaye would be well within their rights to refuse to do a deal with Arsenal should that come about later today.
It’s a risk that the Gunners just have to weigh up but if they can do a deal for Ozil before potentially having to turn to Newcastle then that’s a signing that any Arsenal fan on the street would take over the possibility of a late deal for Cabaye.
They have a chance of signing Ozil but it’s not a small deal for an unknown player. There are going to be differences of opinion and issues over terms which means it may all be a little too late.
If Arsenal don’t get Ozil, how do you think the club will react?
