Last season Giroud was criticised a lot after failing to find the net in the Premier League until October. He suffered from comparisons to Robin van Persie, something he was never going to live up to no matter what he did.
This season, however, could see him surpass last season's goal tally and breakout to be one of the top strikers in the Premier League.
Giroud showed in yesterday’s North London derby that he has the physicality to be a target man, winning header after header against Tottenham’s centre backs. He also demonstrated a strong finishing ability, with a deft flick beat Hugo Lloris at his near post.
Giroud's form has been pleasing for Arsene Wenger so early in the season, although Giroud isn't happy being the only main striker at the club - he has repeatedly called for another striker to be brought in.
Signing a player to compete for his spot will only be good for Giroud, as it will push him onto better his performances even more. More often than not when a player has no competition for his spot in the starting line up he ultimately becomes complacent and his performances suffer. This is why Giroud is so keen on some rivalry within the squad.
Whoever gets to play up front at Arsenal this season will be in for some top quality service, as it looks as though Arsenal are close to completing a deal for Real Madrid's attacking midfielder Mesut Ozil.
Arsenal are reportedly still also trying to bring a striker in, so Giroud can hopefully expect the competition he seeks. It will interesting to see how he develops throughout the season.
