Manchester United have been battling all day to secure late transfers, and one of their top targets appears to have slipped away from them.
Ander Herrera is the man, the 24-year-old Athletic Bilbao midfielder who was apparently open to a move.
Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has claimed there will be no deal.
the Ander Herrera deal is OFF. Manchester United will only sign one midfielder (Fellaini) despite trying for both all day— Guillem Balague (@GuillemBalague) September 2, 2013
He told SkySports News: "The deal is completely dead, having tried all day, it is not going to happen."
Balague added there were bizarre circumstances surrounding the club's efforts.
Club representatives were said to have visited the La Liga offices to file the paperwork required to pay the player's €36 million release clause, but Balague has added the 'representatives' are believed to have been imposters or middle-men with no direct connection to United.
"It's bizarre," he added.
For United fans it's more than that. It's frustrating, but given the way the farcical transfer window on their part has panned out, not really surprising.
