Phil Jones limps out of Liverpool game with ankle injury

Another ankle injury for Phil Jones. Will he be OK for his upcoming fixtures?

Phil Jones has come off in the game between Manchester United for Antonio Valencia after just 35 minutes.

The Ecuadorian entered the fray for the England international - after he appeared to twist his ankle after falling awkwardly in an aerial challenge with Philippe Coutinho.

We say challenge, but it was in fact his lack of a challenge that caused the injury.

Coutinho didn’t jump for the ball while Jones did, leaving him to fall awkwardly onto the surface after making contact with the Brazilian.

The incident caused Tom Cleverly to scythe Coutinho down, and he was subsequently booked. Iago Aspas soon realised that waving an imaginary yellow card is not tolerated in the UK - and he too went into the referee’s book.

While it could be nothing, United fans would be right to be worried considering their current injuries at right-back - and Jones’ history with right ankle problems.

He has twice injured the joint during his Manchester United career, leaving him out of action for in the past during his Old Trafford career.

Injuries have besieged his time in Manchester, and he has just seemed to put his problems behind him - so United fans watching him hobble down the tunnel at Anfield will hope the injury is not as severe as his previous problems.

The hope will be he is fit to return to action after the international break, when Manchester United’s first game back is a fixture with Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on the 14th of September.

Some may argue it is karma for Jones injuring Wayne Rooney ahead of the fixture, but now Manchester United, and England, must hope both recover in time for upcoming fixtures.

Do you think the injury was serious?
