Manchester United weekend round-up: Moyes’s penalty claim; midfielder set for loan move

David Moyes

All the news, views and transfer rumours from Old Trafford this weekend…

Manchester United suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool earlier today, with David Moyes’ side failing to score for the second successive match.

In a game of little goal-mouth action, United’s forwards were well-shackled by an excellent Liverpool defence, while there were times in the game when the visitors’ midfield was overrun by the trio of Lucas, Jordan Henderson and Steven Gerrard.

The only goal of the game came early, when Daniel Sturridge flicked in a Daniel Agger header with one of his own

After the match, Moyes was adamant his side should have had a penalty for a foul on Danny Welbeck. But in truth United lacked the creative spark needed on the day. Perhaps that will arrive in the next 24 hours…

With little more than that until the transfer window closes, United continue to be linked with a whole host of players. For our United-specific transfer news you can read our Saturday report here and our Sunday report here.

Most of today’s reports centre around Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera, who was left on the bench for his side’s match against Real Madrid earlier today. But with time running out for a deal to be done, it could be a manic Monday for United and the supporters eagerly looking on.

Not that Moyes will see it as the end of the world if no new faces arrive. Speaking after the Liverpool match about possible new signings he said, “We will try and do it, but from what I saw of the players, I’m more than happy with the players I’ve got.”

One man he couldn’t call on today was Wayne Rooney, who will also miss England’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers following the head injury he sustained in training yesterday.

After needing 10 stitches he will miss the games against Ukraine and Moldova – games England must win if they hope to qualify for Brazil 2014.

And finally, the Daily Mail has reported that Nick Powell is close to joining Wigan Athletic on loan for the remainder of this season.

Powell is a midfielder of huge promise and will excel if given the opportunity. While he may not yet be ready for the United first team, when he returns from the DW Stadium he may well be.
