Manchester United fans react on Twitter to news of Rooney head injury

Ahead of the massive clash with Liverpool this afternoon United striker Wayne Rooney has had a massive clash of his own - requiring 10 stitches in a head wound.

The Sunday papers are in no doubt - Wayne Rooney will not play against Liverpool this afternoon.

But do not fear if this is the first you are hearing of the news and are wondering if he is all of a sudden going to bolt his way down to London this summer - I stead it appears he has suffered a nasty injury in training on Friday.

The reports are at the moment sketchy, with it being reported that Nemanja Vidic accidentally planted his Serbian size 11’s into the scalp of Rooney in a training ground mishap. But that has now changed, with the general consensus now seeming to suggest that Rooney was involved in an unfortunate clash of heads with fellow England international Phil Jones on Friday.

It is reported he was left with a nasty gash to his cranium, which required 10 stitches - and leaves him very unlikely to feature against his boyhood rivals in today’s Premier League showdown.

So far, there has been absolutely no official word from the club on the matter - but due to the intensity and generally widespread reporting of his demise, it would appear these reports are factual.

This leaves Rooney very unlikely to play against Liverpool, which will be a great shame for David Moyes.

After the transfer rumour surrounding Rooney seemed to die with Jose Mourinho’s signing of Samuel Eto’o for Chelsea last week - this was the opportunity for a speculation-free Rooney to roam around the Anfield pitch and highlight his talents ahead of the international break.

After his performance against Chelsea, and the generally favourable response he has got from the United fans despite his reticence over his future, the game at Anfield for a lifelong Everton fan should have been a special occasion for the 27-year-old.

But if Rooney is not available who will come in for United.

Wilfried Zaha could play out wide - leaving Danny Welbeck to go into a more natural striking position.

A slight tactical rejig could see Ryan Giggs slot into central midfield - while there is also the option of a straight switch for Shinji Kagawa.

But for now, we must wait and see how severe the injury is, and if Rooney can feature after all at Anfield this afternoon…

Here is some reaction on Twitter this morning….
