On this day: Chelsea thrashed, Tottenham madness and Benteke arrival

Benteke 2

On the 31st August 2012 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Aston Villa.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 31st August 2013, but a year earlier - which just happened to be the Transfer Deadline day of last season.

So we have a lot to get through.

What were the main transfer tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here is a select pick of big scoops from Transfer Deadline day, the 31st August 2012 …

Falc-wow

Let’s start with a non-transfer story, as Atletico Madrid tore Chelsea apart in the UEFA Super Cup. Radamel Falcao bagged a hat-trick in the first-half and made the Chelsea defence look like amateurs in a stunning performance.

Pretty City signings

Manchester City were one of the big movers on Transfer Deadline day bringing in Maicon and Javi Garcia.

But neither signing has been a resounding success.

The club let Maicon go back to Italy with Roma this summer for absolutely nothing, while Garcia has struggled to cement a place in the starting line-up.

Daniel, when I first saw you

Liverpool missed out on Daniel Sturridge - after the player insisted on leaving permanently.

Brendan Rodgers wanted to bring in the Englishman on a season-long loan deal but Sturridge instead stayed at Chelsea.

Eventually the player did go to Anfield in January - and is currently one of the in-form players in the Premier League.

Moutinho Spur-ns the chance

Where do you start at Tottenham Hotspur on deadline day a year ago?

They snapped up Hugo Lloris, to the delight of fans - before Clint Dempsey rolled through their gates and not Liverpool’s for a medical.

But they did also flog Rafael van der Vaart, while missing out on Joao Moutinho in a massive disappointment for Andre Villas Boas.

No such disappointment this year, as AVB has done most his business already. Just Bale to go…

Christian intervention

Perhaps the best piece of business a year ago was Aston Villa’s £7 million move for Christian Benteke. The Belgian international has since gone on to become one of the best strikers in the league - and kept Villa in the Premier League last term.

This season remains a blank page, with which he can draw any picture he likes.
