Merson: If Arsenal ‘don’t win tomorrow you will see panic buying’ on Monday

Paul Merson has expressed his feelings about Mathieu Flamini, Arsenal's transfer activity and Arsene Wenger's psychological prowess today.

Arsenal surprised everyone in the week with their signing of Mathieu Flamini on a free transfer, five years after he ditched the club for AC Milan.

In fact the deal seems to have even surprised Arsene Wenger himself, who admitted that he never planned on signing the player when he first allowed him to come train with the club at the end of the season.

Flamini has played just 22 games for AC Milan in the past two seasons, after suffering severe injuries over the past 36 months.

His signature however did not annoy Paul Merson, but the type of deal he has been awarded had the former Arsenal player incandescent with fury on this week’s Gillette Soccer Saturday:

‘’He left in his absolute prime; don’t get me wrong I think he’s a very good player I do. I like him, he ticks the boxes for Arsenal, they need a holding midfield player but, not for three years. You know give him a year…He hasn’t played a lot of football he didn’t play a lot last season I don’t think for Milan…I like him, but three years?’’

After expressing that rage Merson was then talking about the transfer activity in general, claiming a result was needed in the North London derby tomorrow, or Monday could be very busy for Arsenal:

‘’They need to buy someone…if they don’t win tomorrow [in the North London derby] you will see panic buying at the highest level come Monday, at the highest level. I am not joking.’’

On Friday, Arsene Wenger insisted that panic-buying would not happen:

"We will not panic buy, that is for sure. It is not my strength to panic."

But according to Merse this is just what Wenger wants you to think when told by SS presenter Jeff Stelling that Wenger said the media were ‘brainwashing the Arsenal fans’ he said:

‘’That’s what he’s doing, he’s psychologically turning it the other way and the fans keep on going like that. Seriously I’m telling you they need to win tomorrow otherwise they’ll be panic buys, Song will be back everyone.’’

So Merson has made his view clear on the matter, but what do you think will become of Arsenal’s transfer window this summer?
