Liverpool transfer news: £25m triple swoop and new ‘keeper to follow

A select round-up of transfer news relating to Liverpool, including Tiago Ilori, Mamadou Sakho, Victor Moses and Shay Given.

After weeks of frustration in the transfer market Liverpool appear set for some late success, with defenders Tiago Ilori and Mamadou Sakho both due for medicals at Anfield today.

According to the Telegraph, the Sporting Lisbon and PSG players are likely to cost a combined fee of £23million – with Ilori rated at £8million and Sakho at £15million.

The same report also claims Brendan Rodgers will follow up those moves by finalising a loan deal for Chelsea’s Victor Moses (at a cost of £2million) and bring in Shay Given as cover for Simon Mignolet.

They may not be the superstar signings Reds fans had hoped for when Rodgers spoke earlier in the transfer window, but there is no doubt defensive reinforcements were a necessity. And both Ilori and Sakho will bring much-needed qualities to Liverpool’s back-line.

One player who has been tipped in some quarters for a return to Anfield is Fernando Torres. But former teammate Jamie Carragher doesn’t appear to think that is likely.

Writing in the Daily Mail, the ex-Liverpool defender said, “When Torres was left out of the Chelsea line-up against Manchester United, I immediately said, ‘That’s the end’.

The Torres you see now bears no similarity to the one who dazzled during his first two seasons at Anfield.”

So no return to Liverpool for their one-time hero? We will see in due course…
