According to the Express, Everton have rejected Manchester United’s latest bid of £36million for Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines.
Despite adding £8million to their previous offer for the pair, United have seen just as short shrift given to their second bid. And now with just days before the transfer window closes, there is a very real possibility David Moyes could end this summer without any new additions of his own.
Guillermo Varela may have arrived back in June, but the ground work for that move was done prior to Moyes’ arrival, with his signing completed before the new boss officially started his job.
United’s latest offer for the Everton duo valued Fellaini at £23.5million and Baines at £12.5million. And although I have said it before, it bears repeating: If Moyes was that desperate for the Belgian why didn’t he simply meet his release clause prior to its expiration?
Whatever the answer may be, the Daily Mail reports that Fellaini has asked to join Manchester United, although he has not yet made an official transfer request.
In a transfer window full of sagas – this appears to be the latest. But when Monday draws to a close, it will be interesting to see if either of the Everton players have swapped Goodison Park for Old Trafford.
One player set to leave United – if only temporarily – is left-back Alex Buttner.
The Express reports that the Dutchman has agreed personal terms with Besiktas and will make a loan move to the Turkish side in the coming days.
The report claims the move could be a pre-cursor to Baines joining United, but that remains to be seen.
Buttner has shown flashes of brilliance since his move to Old Trafford, and would be an effective alternative on the left-wing as well as being cover for Patrice Evra. But with a World Cup approaching, it seems he will be playing his football in Turkey in an attempt to gain a place in the Holland squad next year.
