Tottenham Hotspur latest: Including Europa League draw and Arsenal build up

White Hart Lane 4

A round up of the latest news and transfer stories about Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham have been handed a tricky Europa League group stage with matches against Anzhi Makhachkala, FC Sheriff and Tromso. The North Londoners are the favourites to win their group and their chances will be helped after Anzhi recently decide to sell off their best players.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has stoked up the fire ahead of this Sunday’s North London derby suggesting Tottenham’s summer signings could be counter productive for the club. Wenger has suggested the balance of Tottenham’s team will now be weakened rather than strengthened.

It doesn’t stop there with the Frenchman also having his say on the Gareth Bale transfer saga, saying Real Madrid have been very generous with their world record offer for the player.

“They are very generous. I don’t think the price is linked with the quality of the players at all, especially this summer,” said Wenger.

Andre Villas-Boas may have to keep one eye on Roberto Soldado ahead of the derby, after the striker was overlooked for the Spain squad to play Finland in their next World Cup qualifying match.

Spurs have agreed a deal with Steaua Bucharest for centre back Vlad Chiriches. Andre Villas-Boas has been searching for defensive cover this summer and Chiriches arrives with a reputation as one of the most promising young defenders from across Europe.

The club have also completed a £30 million deal for Roma's Erik Lamela. He becomes the club's seventh signing of the summer and the deal means the club have broken their transfer record for the third time.

Tottenham face a fight with Arsenal and Liverpool to sign Atletico Madrid star Arda Turan before the transfer deadline this Monday. The Turk has a buy out clause in his contract around the €24 million mark and reports suggest Spurs will use cash generated from selling Gareth Bale to make the move.

The delay in announcing that deal for Bale could be part of a plan Tottenham have to weaken Arsenal. The Gunners have been linked with several top Real Madrid players including Angel Di Maria and Karim Benzema, with the Spanish side reluctant to do deals for them until Bale’s arrival has been confirmed.

Another player who looks set to leave Spurs before the close of play on Monday is forward Emmanuel Adebayor. Reports from Germany have suggested that FC Schalke are lining up a potential deal for Adebayor who would be used as a third striker at the Bundesliga club.

His departure would seemingly confirm that AVB wants to retain Jermain Defoe in the current squad for the rest of the season. Defoe bagged two goals for Spurs in their 3-0 win over Dinamo Tbilisi ending suggestions that he could move to Stoke City.
