A look at five Tottenham players who could leave before the transfer deadline
It has been a busy transfer window at Tottenham by anybody's standards, with many observers tipping their squad to go on and challenge for the league.
But what about potential exits, who could be outgoing before the transfer window closes? Here are five possibilities...
Yes, the big one. Spurs fought against the possibility of their star player leaving early in the summer, but after it became apparent he wanted to go, they have spent freely to the point where his loss will not become a great issue. Andre Villas-Boas admitted earlier this week the sale is likely, although Spurs have been accused of dragging their heels, expect it to go through ahead of deadline.
There has been plenty of interest in Emmanuel Adebayor from Besiktas and belatedly Schalke, but his huge wages represent a stumbling block. If the right offer comes in ahead of deadline, and he is prepared to leave and possibly take a cut in wages, he could be off.
Keeping Defoe is preferable to Adebayor, but if Spurs are considering cashing in on a striker, they will not be short of suitors for Defoe. Don't expect him to drop down to QPR as has been suggested, but some late dealing can't be ruled out if a tempting offer presents itself to player and club, with him firmly second choice behind Roberto Soldado.
It's true, Heurelho Gomes is still a Spurs player. He did impress on loan at Hoffenheim last season before picking up an injury, and has been linked with a return to former club PSV. With Brad Friedel in reserve, surely no Spurs fan would begrudge the 32-year-old a move whether it be on loan or permanently.
Zeki Fryers' development was always going to be a project rather than an instant route to the first team, with his limitations cruelly exposed by the ruthless Falcao in pre-season. He is unlikely to gain first team chances, so expect a loan move for the defender.
