A Premier League mainstay for over a decade, William Gallas, 36, may be about to take his football experience down under after becoming allured by the atmosphere generated by Australian fans, the increasing public support of the A-League and the reciprocated interest from Melbourne Victory, the biggest club in the country according to consensus.
A source close to the player told Herald Sun that Gallas 'is interested [in playing for Victory] and it would be a fantastic challenge because the league is improving very quickly.
'He likes the fact that there are many fans in the stadiums and they are passionate. The A-League has strong interest from the public, which is very important for William. He needs passion. When you have played in the Premier League for more than 10 years it is difficult to play in a place where there is no passion.'
Club manager Ange Postecoglou, meanwhile, expressed his desire to add Gallas — formerly of Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur but currently a free agent — because it would satisfy their requirement for a marquee player.
'I think with players like William Gallas you can never say whether you are close [to concluding personal terms] or not,' he said.
'Would we be interested? Yes, of course. We’ve got a marquee spot to fill before the season and it’s got to be the right fit for us.'
Victory are to rival Crystal Palace for the player's signature.
