It will be a case of old rivals but new teams this evening, as Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea face Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich at the Eden Arena in Prague.
The managers’ rivalry in Spain inspired countless column-inches, and the returning Blues boss will see this as the ideal opportunity to lay down a marker for the season ahead.
The German treble-holders are regarded by many as the best side in Europe, and although some view the Super Cup as a glorified friendly, both coaches will understand the importance of early European success.
The last English side to win the Super Cup was Liverpool back in 2005, and the Reds also won the competition the last time Bayern competed for the trophy in 2001.
Although it has been said that Guardiola has the impossible job in succeeding Jupp Heynckes, a win tonight would see him achieve what no other manager of a German side has done. German clubs have failed to win the trophy in seven attempts, three of which have been from Bayern.
Chelsea will be without new signings Samuel Eto’o and Willian for tonight’s game, while Thiago Alcantara is missing for the Bundesliga champions after suffering ligament damage last weekend.
What is your prediction for the game?
