Arsenal to use transfer flop as makeweight in deal for midfielder?

Arsene Wenger Waves

AS Saint Etienne have a player that Arsenal want, who have a player that Saint Etienne want.

Arsenal flop Park Chu-Young, signed from AS Monaco just days before the deadline day for 2011's summer window, could be used as leverage during the club's negotiation with AS Saint Etienne over the acquisition of defensive midfielder Josuha Guilavogui, a 22-year-old noted for his versatility on the pitch.

St Etienne have reportedly made an enquiry over the availability of Chu-Young, 28. The Daily Mail claim the forward, who spent last season on loan at Celta Vigo and has made just a solitary league appearance for the Gunners, is a very real target for the Ligue 1 side.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have been studying St Etienne and have a high regard for Guilavogui, a player who has been compared to talismanic midfielder Patrick Vieira, and is valued at £6m by transfermarkt.co.uk.

The club have already tabled an £8.5m fee, according to French journal LeSport10, however, in order to make negotiations smoother, Arsene Wenger could consider using unfancied South Korea international Young as a makeweight in the deal.

Wenger is yet to spend a penny of his £70m summer fund, having acquired Yaya Sanogo and Mathieu Flamini on free transfers. He is now under pressure to significantly bolster his thin squad ahead of the deadline on Monday, September 2.
