Manchester City readying €45m solution to defensive woes - French report

Eliaquim Mangala is being linked with a move to Manchester City from Porto.

Manchester City were dealt a harsh lesson last weekend, when their defensive frailties were shone under the spotlight by Cardiff City - and the sprightly display of attacking verve from former Manchester United star Frazier Campbell.

Javi Garcia is clearly playing out of position, with his lack of experience playing in a back four regularly exposed at the Cardiff City Stadium. Meanwhile Joleon Lescott’s advancing years have seen him lose a yard of pace - while his lack of regular match action cannot be helping his cause.

At the end of it all, City were defeated - and a 60-year-old Malaysian man in a football-shirt over designer suit ensemble celebrated as if he had scored the winning goals himself.

Meanwhile the Premier League’s best John Kerry lookalike Manuel Pellegrini chewed wasps and realised - I need another centre back.

With Vincent Kompany out injured the team look a shadow of their capabilities at the back, and you have to feel a defensive addition is in order before the transfer window shuts on September 2nd.

And today it is reported that the club are willing to bankroll a massive deal for French international defender Eliaquim Mangala.

Arsenal fans will remember him as the rash teenager who broke the foot of Kieran Gibbs in 2009 - but since then he has matured into a much more stable and sturdy central defender ever since switching to Portuguese powerhouse Porto.

Nowadays he is a French international at just the age of 22 and has a release clause of €45 million in his contract in Portugal - and the reports today suggest that the club would be willing to spend that amount to bring him to the Etihad Stadium.

L’Equipe suggest that City would quadruple his current salary and see him team up with fellow French internationals Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy at the club.

Here he is in action…
