Manchester City latest: Champions League draw and Mangala 'in talks'

All the latest news, views and transfer rumours from the Etihad...

Following last night's Capital One Cup draw, Manchester City have also discovered their opponents in the Champions League group stage.

Placed in the third pot of seeds for Europe’s elite competition, the Blues were at serious risk of finding themselves in another group of death. And yet you sense they will be happy overall – despite having to face holders Bayern Munich.

Along with the German champions, City will play Russian side CSKA Moscow and Viktoria Plzen of the Czech Republic.

Given Manuel Pellegrini’s previous experience in Europe, it will be a group he will not underestimate but one he will expect to successfully navigate.

City also have an early chance to avenge their FA Cup final defeat when they face Wigan in the third round of the League Cup.

The match will take place on the 24th or 25th September.

Given the squad depth and ambition at the Etihad, it will be interesting to see who is picked for each competition in the coming weeks.

And they may yet add to that squad, with the Express following up reports from France that Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala is in talks with the Blues.

The Frenchman has previously been linked with both Manchester United and Chelsea, but L’Equipe has claimed City are prepared to match the player’s £38million release clause.

The report claims the player is yet to decide on the move, and concludes with the apparent footnote that Martin Demichelis is also expected to join the Blues in a £4million move.

Whether City would really sign both players prior to Monday’s deadline remains to be seen.
