A round up of the news stories and transfer rumours about Liverpool FC.
The Express has reported that Liverpool are about to go back to Sporting Lisbon with a £6 million offer for young defender Tiago Ilori. The Portuguese Under-20 star is firmly on the club’s radar after Brendan Rodgers saw a £3 million offer rejected earlier this summer.
There are also hints from the Metro that Liverpool have approached Ajax’s Toby Alderweireld over a possible late switch to Anfield. Atletico Madrid recently saw an offer for the Belgian rejected and Liverpool’s interest in the defender seems to come and go on a weekly basis.
One player who definitely won’t be making the switch to Liverpool is forward Alessandro Matri. The Juventus star is expected to complete a £10 million move to AC Milan following reported interest from the Reds earlier this summer as Rodgers targeted attacking additions to the squad.
Steven Gerrard has tried to take the pressure off his Liverpool teammates, stating that the club are not looking forward to the match with Manchester United this weekend. The mid-week League Cup tie against Notts County saw Kolo Toure, Aly Cissokho and Joe Allen pick up injuries ahead of the game.
Liverpool’s reward for that 4-2 win over the League One side is a trip to arch rivals Manchester United. However, star striker Luis Suarez could make his return to action in that game as it’ll be the first match he can play in following the completion of his recent ten game ban.
The Uruguayan has not been sitting around doing nothing and bagged a goal for Liverpool in a behind the scenes friendly match. Suarez played in a friendly against Port Vale at Liverpool’s training ground which suggests he will be ready to go straight back into the team when he is available.
It’s not all doom and gloom from the Liverpool captain after he praised Raheem Sterling, saying the winger deserves his recent cal up to the England national side.
“Raheem has looked really sharp and lively right the way through pre-season. He hasn't started a Premier League game yet, but there are plenty of games throughout the season where he can prove he is international class,” he told the Liverpool Echo.
He’s also confirmed that the club are looking to make one or two more additions to the team before the close of the transfer window this Monday.
“The changes the manager has made during the summer are really positive and hopefully there are still one or two more players to come in,” he told Liverpool’s website.
There is also blossoming excitement over young winger Jordon Ibe, with former star John Aldridge piling the praise onto Rodgers for the way he’s handled the young winger. Aldridge says Ibe could potentially have an even bigger impact at Anfield than Raheem Sterling.
