Spurs seal deal for Argentine forward.
Andre Villas-Boas' summer spending has totalled £89m as Tottenham Hotspur have added £30m signing Erik Lamela to a five-pronged assault on the transfer market that already included the acquisitions of Etienne Capoue, Roberto Soldado, Nacer Chadli and Paulinho.
A number of media outlets, including Sky Sports News, are reporting that Lamela's transfer from AS Roma to Spurs is complete, a credible assumption following 24 hours of personal negotiations while the player was in North London with his agent Pablo Sabbag (an ally of Tottenham technical director Franco Baldini).
Lamela, 21, a tricky dribbler with a penchant for goals, spent just two seasons at the Stadio Olimpico following an education at famed South American club River Plate.
While his debut year at Roma was not without hiccups (he had to adjust to an unfamiliar 'tiki-taka' system that inhibited his natural desire to take on defenders with the ball at his feet), his second season was a far greater success and the thrice-capped Argentina international returned 15 goals and six assists from 35 appearances in all competitions.
The signing may also trigger the record-breaking sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid as Lamela could be regarded to be a near like-for-like positional replacement for the outbound Welshman.
