12pm Sports News: Featuring Villas-Boas, Murray and the England cricket team

A round up of the latest news stories from across the world of sport.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas is set to explain why Gareth Bale did not show up for training yesterday. AVB is expected to face a flurry of Bale related questions at his pre-match press conference as Spurs prepare to play Dinamo Tblisi in the second round of their Europa League play-off game.

Sky Sports sources have claimed that Chelsea are in advanced talks with FC Porto over a deal for winger Christian Atsu. Liverpool were strongly linked with the 21-year-old earlier this summer but are thought to have refused to pay Porto’s asking price for the youngster.

Arsenal are in the draw for the Champions League group stage which takes place tomorrow afternoon at around 4pm. The Gunners beat Turkish side Fenerbahce 5-0 over two legs in the qualification play-off round to ensure their place in the draw.

The England cricket team has issued an apology following celebrations after the final Ashes Test against Australia. Reports claimed that several players urinated on the pitch.

“We got carried away amongst the euphoria of winning such a prestigious series and accept some of our behaviour was inappropriate. If that has caused any offence to anyone, we apologise,” read a statement.

US Open champion Andy Murray will begin the defence of his title with a match against Michael Llodra this evening. Murray will not be on court until the evening session which means any Brits wanting to follow his progress won’t see him in court until midnight at the earliest.
