News, views and rumours relating to Manchester United in the past 24 hours.
Manchester United drew 0-0 with Chelsea at Old Trafford on Monday evening, holding Jose Mourinho’s Blues to a stalemate in which Wayne Rooney was under the spotlight over speculation he could move to Stamford Bridge this summer.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho gave Rooney ’48 hours’ to decide whether to stay at Old Trafford or join the Blues, in his post-match interview.
"One way or another he has to say 'I want to leave' or 'I want to stay'," said Mourinho.
"The person that started the story has to finish the story. For the good of everyone, it is time to finish the story."
However, Wayne Rooney is ‘not planning’ to hand in a written transfer request to the champions, despite Mourinho’s clear ultimatum over his future, according to reports today.
Former assistant manager under Sir Alex Ferguson, Mike Phelan believes Rooney will stay at United ‘for now’.
"I think Wayne Rooney will continue to be a Manchester United player for the not-so-foreseeable future," explained Phelan when quizzed over speculation on the England number 10.
Meanwhile, speculation that United could swap Rooney for Juan Mata intensified after the Spanish maestro was left on the bench for Monday’s clash – the 25-year-old Chelsea midfielder has yet to start a game for the Blues since the arrival of Jose Mourinho.
In further transfer news, David Moyes ‘denied’ United had made a bid for Gareth Bale as the Welshman’s future hangs in the balance at White Hart Lane following an offer from an unnamed club to match long-term suitors Real Madrid’s bid to sign the Spurs star.
Moyes was asked if Manchester United was that club and the Scot responded with "no".
However, reports have emerged that Tottenham have ‘quoted’ £125 million for Gareth Bale if United want him.
Meanwhile, United are still linked with a new bid for Marouane Fellaini after Everton rejected a combined offer for the Belgian and his teammate Leighton Baines of £28 million last week.
According to The Telegraph, United are preparing to up their offer to £20 million for the Toffees midfielder.
In other news, captain Nemanja Vidic is looking forward to United’s clash with Liverpool next Sunday, whilst youngster Phil Jones is ‘wary’ of Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge and remains focused on next weekend’s clash with United’s old foes.
