Former Manchester United whizkid scores on injury comeback in Serie A

Giuseppe Rossi scored in a 2-1 win for Fiorentina against Catania.

It is almost a decade ago, but it seems almost like yesterday when Giuseppe Rossi was scoring goals for fun in Manchester United's youth teams.

He had seemed like a certainty to make the breakthrough, but with Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez in front of him, he left to sign for Villareal in pursuit of first team football.

His career there was a huge success, his form winning international recognition and even seeing him linked with a switch to Barcelona.

And then disaster struck. Rossi suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury, and then just as his rehabiliation seemed to be nearing completion, exactly the same injury struck again.

There were fears his career could even be over, but in January, Italian side Fiorentina took a gamble on him - signing him with a view to the 2013/14 season.

And that move might just be about to pay off.

After an impressive pre-season, Rossi was handed a start in their Serie A encounter with Catania, and wasted no time getting off the mark.

He scored the opener in a 2-1 win, with former Manchester City loanee David Pizarro scoring the winner.

Could Rossi surprise everybody and win a place in Italy's World Cup squad next summer?
