On this day: Dembele going nowhere and Arsenal targeted different Newcastle midfielder

Mousa Dembele

On the 26th August 2012 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Tottenham Hotspur, Fulham, Arsenal, Newcastle and Liverpool.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 26th August 2013, but a year earlier

What were the main transfer tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 26th August 2012.

You Mousa be joking

After tearing Manchester United apart at Old Trafford Belgian international Mousa Dembele was being linked with plenty of teams.

Fulham manager Martin Jol however remained adamant on the subject, Dembele was going absolutely nowhere:

“Dembele is playing and he likes the club so there’s no problem. You have to pay a lot of money to get Dembele, so there won’t be a lot of clubs putting that sort of money on the table. So I think we are fine.”

Well of course that was not the case, as just three days after Jol’s adamant speech - Dembele signed for Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of £15 million.

Cheick-ing him out

Arsenal were reportedly set to make a move for Newcastle United destroyer Cheick Tiote.

It came after Alex Song departed for Barcelona, and Arsene Wenger spoke of the clubs desire for central midfield options.

In the end nothing ever came of this deal, and the Ivorian midfielder had a terrible season for Newcastle as they barely survived relegation.

A year later, and Arsenal are again after a central midfielder on the Tyne … this time Yohan Cabaye.

Martin Skrtel made the headlines after his performance against Manchester City, where he went from hero to zero.

The Slovakian opened the scoring for Liverpool at Anfield as the home side dominated proceedings for large parts of the game.

But they were dealt a life-line when Skrtel bumped into Reina and Toure levelled. But things got worse for Skrtel. He failed to look behind him before playing a back-pass and it rolled straight into the path of Carlos Tevez - who could not believe his luck.

He tucked it past Pepe Reina and made the scores 2-2 at full time.

Fast forward a year and the player is being linked with a move away from Merseyside - after slipping down the pecking order.
