David Moyes has hinted that Everton are holding Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines back in their careers after the Toffees rejected Manchester United’s bid for the pair.
“If I’d been Everton manager and Sir Alex had come asking (for the two),” Moyes said, “I’d have found it very difficult to keep them because I always felt the right thing to do was what was right for the players.”
That is easy to say from his current stand-point. But one doubts he would have been so accommodating to the whims of another club had he still be in charge at Goodison Park.
The United boss also refused to reveal if he would make a new offer for the pair, only that if so it would be made in secret. The way the transfer window has been going this summer – I’m not sure secret still exists.
Over to Spain now, where Marca reports that United wish to sign Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria.
While the Argentine has previously been linked with Arsenal and PSG, the Spanish paper claims United are most keen for his signature, but that there are contrasting feelings within the Bernabeu as to whether the player should be allowed to leave.
The price quoted is €40million, but both the player and his manager Carlo Ancelotti are against a sale that the club’s hierarchy believe would be good business in light of Gareth Bale’s imminent arrival.
The Daily Star reports that another Madrid player is still on United’s radar – Mesut Ozil – and that a £30million bid is being considered.
It seems that Bale’s arrival could be the one to set the dominos falling. At least United and others will hope so.
And finally, the Sun claims United winger Bebe is a target for Portuguese club Pacos de Ferreira, but that his wages could be a stumbling block for any move.
One thing is for sure: his future, much like his past, is surely away from Old Trafford.
