As Podolski scores double, why would he jump from frying pan into the fire?

Schalke 04

Lukas Podolski bagged a couple of goals this afternoon, but is being linked with Schalke 04

Arsenal today claimed a comfortable 3-1 away victory against Fulham at Craven Cottage, as they finished off a week that started with difficulty, but has ended up more than productive.

The goal hero in the game was German international Lukas Podolski. The 28-year-old forward found himself on the score-sheet twice today, in what was his first start of the 2013-14 season.

And it comes as a timely reminder of his talents - after various reports linked him with various possible destinations emerged at the end of the week.

VfL Wolfsburg, Galatasaray, even Tottenham Hotspur were being mooted as genuinely possible destinations.

But as the day rumbled on, one team above any other appeared to take the lead in his race - Schalke 04.

It was reported that the German international was concerned that a lack of first-team action could be on the cards for him this season - and that in order to ensure a place in the World Cup squad for his country, a loan deal back to the Bundesliga this summer would be a good idea.

But you have to wonder why anyone would want to end up playing at Schalke 04 at the moment.

We understand that times at Arsenal have not exactly been rosy recently, but jumping a ship just getting stable again to join a sinking one makes no sense.

The Gelsenkirchen outfit have had a dismal start to their 2013-14 season. They have drawn two games this season lost the other pair, including a 2-1 defeat against Hannover 96 this weekend.

The club is suffering severe injury turmoil and are looking a fair way off of Bundesliga challengers this season.

Add to that what could be a potential exit from the Champions League, after they drew 1-1 at home against PAOK Salonika in the first leg of their qualification tie.

Above all else, Arsenal would be stupid to let him go anywhere, and Podolski will be hoping that this performance against The Cottagers was just the start of an excellent season in North London, and not a swansong before taking up a harder job in his homeland.
