Unfortunately for them Chelsea came in with a bid at the last minute and he looks to be off to play his football at Stamford Bridge, pending a medical and work permit hearing.
This is not all bad news as they can now focus their attention to get a player more suited to replacing Gareth Bale. A move for Erik Lamela has been widely reported in the media and this would be an excellent alternative to the Brazilian, although they may play in similar positions Lamela is three years younger than Willian.
He also comes from Serie A rather than the Russian League, where you have to admit that the standard is higher and the young Argentinian has already impressed the Roma fans with his performances last season.
So there shouldn’t be a reason for negative thoughts at White Hart Lane as they still have over a week to find more replacements, once Bale has completed his move to Real Madrid they will still have a large chunk of that fee to invest in other players.
The important thing is that they have already brought in good players in many other positions in their squad. Panicking over one player choosing to go to another club would be very risky at this stage because they still have time to find the right player.
They have prepared well for Bale’s departure already so there is no reason for Tottenham to be fearful of the gap he will leave in the squad. The likes of Soldado, Paulinho and Etienne Capoue will potentially make them a better all round squad even without Gareth Bale’s services.
Despite some suggesting they can win the title this Tottenham have a very tough fight for top 4 on their hands, their squad should be able to do it but we said that last year and we all know how that ended up.
