Liverpool round-up: Including Coates injury confirmed and transfer targets

News, views and rumours relating to Liverpool FC in the past 24 hours.

In transfer news, Brendan Rodgers insisted Liverpool will sign a new centre back due to Sebastian Coates injury, which could see him sidelined for the rest of the season.

The 22-year-old sustained an anterior cruciate knee ligament away on international duty with Uruguay and is unlikely to play any further part in Liverpool’s season.

“It it is probably going to put him out for the year. He was going to go out and play but that has put an end to that,” explained Rodgers.

“We want to strengthen the squad. To maximise Andre Wisdom's talent, I need to get someone in on loan. I just think the position Andre plays, it is preferable to have that experience.”

Tottenham have yet to agree a deal for Willian, despite Rodgers’ concession that the Reds had failed in their pursuit of the Brazil attacker.

Daniel Agger pledged his future to Liverpool, dismissing recent interest from Barcelona and committing his future to the Kop.

Liverpool completed the signing of Aly Cissokho on loan from Valencia for the season. The 25-year-old French defender will provide competition for Jose Enrique.

Despite reports that Liverpool had made a £10 million offer for highly rated England youngster Will Hughes, Derby have dismissed claims they had received an offer.

Elsewhere, reports have emerged that Liverpool are ‘in for’ Kyriakos Papadopoulos as Schalke admitted ‘defeat’ in their hopes of keeping hold of the highly rated Greece defender. Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt said:

"There are a lot of clubs to take into account. We're going to speak to each other when it takes concrete form."

In other news, Kop favourite Peter Beardsley stated Coutinho could be ‘as good’ as Reds legend Kenny Dalglish.

“I love Coutinho. He is outstanding and has unbelievable ability,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

“If he stays here for a long time he’s got a chance of being as big as Kenny – that kind of stature. I look at his ability and I think he could be the new Kenny Dalglish. He is a very special player.”
