Liverpool - Rodgers confirms he is in market for new central defender

With Sebastian Coates sidelined, Brendan Rodgers is looking to bring in a new centre-half, and wants Andre Wisdom to go on loan.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed the club are in the market for a new centre-half following the injury Sebastian Coates sustained.

The Reds' have been linked with numerous central defenders throughout the transfer window, the latest being Tiago Ilori of Sporting Lisbon.

“It’s something that we’re looking at, certainly, a player to come in in that position.

“He’s picked up a similar injury to what Martin Skrtel had last year which is probably going to rule him out for most of the season.”

Rodgers also said he would like another player to come in to allow Andre Wisdom to go on loan to get some first team experience.

“I think for us to maximise young Andre Wisdom’s talent I need to get him some games and the idea is to get him out on loan but I can only do that if we bring someone in with a bit more experience.

“I just think that the position that he plays, it’s preferable if you have that wee bit of experience. We introduced him into the team last season at right-back and he’d done very, very well as a young player stepping in.

“He played centre-half throughout pre-season and I think that’ll be his number one position.”

The Reds’ boss also denied any knowledge of a bid for Martin Skrtel from Napoli, saying the first he had heard of it was this [Thursday] morning.

He is also anticipating a tough game this weekend away to Aston Villa on Saturday.

“They set up to defend half a pitch and they break out with the pace of Benteke and Agbonlahor in particular, and you have Andreas Weimann on the side, so those three are a real threat going forward.

“It’s going to be a tough game, it’s their first game at home this season as well so they’ll be looking to perform well.”

When asked about the Willian situation – who is about to sign for Tottenham Hotspur after he was target by Liverpool, Rodgers said: “I think over the course of the summer we’ve been very ambitious in our attempts to get in players to improve the team.

“If it’s one when we can’t get them in we just have to move on. We’ve got 11 days to go, we have to do everything we possibly can.

“If you’re going to climb the league you have to have quality.”
