Chelsea fans react on Twitter to Demba Ba's performance

Ba And Torres

Demba Ba was a surprise selection for Chelsea up front against Aston Villa. How did it go?

Jose Mourinho sprung a striking surprise in his team selection for Chelsea's home game against Aston Villa on Wednesday night.

He picked Demba Ba to start the match, with Sunday's striker Fernando Torres not even on the bench.

It was unexpected because the striker who had featured most regularly in pre-season was youngster Romelu Lukaku, who once again had to make do with a place on the bench.

He had also been linked with moves away from the club in recent days, with Roma touted as one potential destination.

So how did he get on? Well the fact he was substituted without a goal after 65 minutes sort of tells it's own stories, but we dug a little deeper via stats, and the reactions of Chelsea fans.

We can reveal that Ba had just 18 touches of the ball, exactly the same in 65 minutes that Lukaku also had in 25 minutes.

Perhaps more staggering, was the 57 per cent pass accuracy he recorded just eight of his 14 passes. When you consider that one of those was the opening kick off, it seems even worse. Lukaku by contrast made 75 per cent of his passes count, nine of 12.

Ba did, to his credit, make one key pass leading to a goalscoring opportunity, which was not converted.

He had one shot on goal, from outside the box with his right-foot, which was on target, but failed to get into positions in which to demonstrate his firepower from closer range.

Ba failed to win the one aerial battle he competed for, being fouled twice over the course of the match. Frustratingly, he was caught offside five times, as he tried unsuccessfully to catch the Villa backline unawares.

So what did watching Chelsea fans make of him? Here's a clue... they are not happy...

What did you think of Ba's display? Was it his last game for the club?
