The Premier League got underway this weekend we thought we'd look at which team impressed us the most...
As an overall performance it has to be said that Manchester City looked polished and well drilled in their 4-0 win over Newcastle. Even before their opponents went down to 10 men they looked too strong and too good for them.
Manuel Pellegrini looks to have prepared his team very well in pre season combining the strength and power of Fernandinho and Yaya Toure in central midfield with the pace and trickery of Jesus Navas out on the wing. Newcastle were never allowed to get into the game and they were restricted to long range efforts on goal. Once David Silva opened the scoring Pellegrini’s men never looked back.
They suffered a blow as Vincent Kompany limped off through injury close to the end but they possess strength in depth so you can expect that it won't affect them too much. After only one game they have set an early standard and I think it will take a superb team to finish above them come May.
Elsewhere Aston Villa impressed in their opening day win away against Arsenal, it was crucial during the off season that they kept hold of Benteke and it paid off as he scored two of his sides three goals. They showed signs that they had progressed from last season when they had a relegation battle on their hands.
Honourable mentions go to Southampton who grabbed a win away at West Brom and Chelsea who put on a professional display to see off newly promoted Hull City. The teams mentioned above will look to build on good displays while those who didn’t quite set the world alight be hoping for better performances in the next week
