After Manchester United had a £28million bid rejected for Everton’s Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini, it is being reported they will return with an improved offer before the week is through.
The Guardian claims United will now make separate offers for the two players, having seen their combined offer branded as “derisory and insulting” by Goodison Park officials.
The same story claims Roberto Martinez is considering a move for Wigan’s James McCarthy should Fellaini leave.
It claims Fellaini will ultimately move to Old Trafford for a fee in the region of €20million, and references the fact that while his €27million release clause has now expired, it will come back into play at the start of each new transfer window.
Should United be successful with just one of the two bids, in the current light it seems far more likely to be in their pursuit of a much-needed midfielder.
In other transfer news, the Metro claims United are genuinely interested in Samuel Eto’o and that a meeting will take place between the club and the striker’s representatives today.
It seems a strange and rather inexplicable rumour, given that United can already call on some outstanding strikers. But the story claims that should Wayne Rooney get his wish to leave the club, Eto’o will be a cheap but effective replacement.
