Manchester City play Newcastle United this evening, having seen title rivals Manchester United and Chelsea put in impressive performances at the weekend.
Tonight will give fans the first glimpse of Manuel Pellegrini’s side in a competitive fixture, and will introduce potential new club heroes in the forms of Alvaro Negredo, Jesus Navas, Stevan Jovetic and Fernandinho.
There is no doubt the former Malaga coach has spent wisely; now he must show he can blend the new and the old into an effective and successful team.
The line-ups for this evening’s match are as follows:
City starting XI: Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany, Lescott, Clichy, Navas, Fernandinho, Toure, Silva, Aguero, Dzeko
Subs: Pantilimon, Negredo, Milner, Kolarov, Garcia, Nasri, Rodwell
Newcastle starting XI: Krul, Debuchy, Taylor, Coloccini, Yanga-Mbiwa, Tiote, Gutierrez, Ben Arfa, Sissoko, Gouffran, Cisse
Subs: Elliot, Dummett, Anita, Marveuax, Obertan, Sammy Ameobi, Shola Ameobi
Speaking in the build-up to the game, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew revealed he was confident despite acknowledging his opponents’ strength.
“They have invested again heavily, Manchester City,” Pardew said, “and they are obviously going to be one of the contenders for the title. So it’s a tough game for us, but we’re more than ready for it.”
In just under two hours we will see exactly how ready the Magpies are.
And finally, Pablo Zabaleta has signed a new four-year deal with the club.
Last season’s player of the year said, “I have been here five years and it feels like home.
“It is a club that is very well-organised and when you see that everything works well you want to be here.”
