After the first Premier League weekend, here is a look at a few players who stole the show for their sides...
After Liverpool had dominated against Stoke City they had to rely on their new goalkeeper to be sure of a winning start and all three points at Anfield as they conceded a late penalty through a Daniel Agger handball. He managed to save Jonathan Walters’ penalty before quickly reacting to Kenwyne Jones’ follow-up to spare his side’s blushes.
Robin Van Persie
Danny Welbeck also deserves a mention for his part in Manchester United’s victory over Swansea City but Van Persie’s strikes were top class, with his first one coming at a crucial time in the first half with the home side having the Lion’s share of the play. It’s doubtful that it will be the last time he’ll be Manchester United’s hero this season after his brace at the Liberty Stadium.
After missing one penalty which he managed to knock in the rebound, it takes a lot of bottle to be able to step up and convert the second one – that’s exactly what Benteke did in Aston Villa’s shock win at the Emirates Stadium to pile the pressure on Arsene Wenger.
He had a very busy afternoon at Anfield, that’s for sure. And were it not for his many interventions, the scoreline could have been damning to say the least. Liverpool hit the target with 11 of their 26 shots, meaning Begovic made terrific saves from Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson and Jose Enrique and was very unfortunate to end up on the losing side.
It was a choice between Rickie Lambert and Kasani for the final hero of the week but I think Kasani’s winner is going to carry huge significance for Fulham this season. After coming under a lot of pressure from Sunderland, it was expected that Fulham would show their unfortunately typical away form – but Kasani’s header got them off to a vital winning start.
