Tottenham Hotspur fans react on Twitter to Nacer Chadli's debut

Nacer Chadli was one of Tottenham's debutantes against Crystal Palace.

Nacer Chadli was one of three Tottenham players handed a Premier League debut in their 1-0 away win over Crystal Palace, and perhaps the one arriving with most intrigue.

While Roberto Soldado and Paulinho's positions were obvious, Chadli had recently varied from being a forward at Twente to playing in part of a midfield three for Belgium's national side.

He was handed a start for Spurs in a role with much spotlight, the left-wing position usually occupied by Gareth Bale, although of course the injured Welshman had very much a free role for much of last season.

So we decided to take a look at how he performed, both from a statistical perspective and in terms of reaction from supporters.

Chadli had four efforts on goal, none of which found the target, but was clearly not afraid to shoot on sight, with three from outside the box with his right foot and one a header.

Playing the full 90 minutes, Chadli made three key passes leading to goalscoring opportunities, with only striker Roberto Soldado notably making more - showing he is more than simply a poacher.

In all he completed 41 out of his 47 passes, 87 per cent in total, helping Spurs keep possession by completing 23 of 24 in the middle third of the pitch.

A breakdown of his passes can be seen in the graphic below:

Danny Rose was his preferred teammate, finding him 12 times down the left-hand side, but also spreading the ball across to the right to opposite full-back Kyle Walker on five occasions.

Defensively, Chadli made three successful tackles from four attempts, with Paulinho and Sigurdsson making four each. He also made two successful clearances and one interception.

However he did win just two out of six aerial duels he contested, and from his two crossing attempts - neither found a teammate, so there is clearly some room for improvement.

He was also criticised post-match by Crystal Palace manager Ian Holloway for 'hauling down' opponent Stephen Dobbie in the penalty area, an incident he claimed should have resulted in a penalty.

So what did the fans have to say about him? Here's a selection via Twitter:
