Just as it appeared the Wayne Rooney saga was quietening down – with Chelsea having reportedly given up the chase – so Arsenal have now stepped back into the headlines.
The Mirror reports that Arsene Wenger will turn his attention back to the Manchester United striker after Luis Suarez’s U-turn. The story has a strange sense of déjà vu, given that it has been trotted out numerous times already this summer. But it must be a quiet news day.
So quiet in fact, that the Daily Mail have come up with a corker of a story – claiming David Moyes has turned down the chance to sign both Mesut Ozil and Willian because he isn’t after a play-maker!
Isn’t this the same Moyes who spent weeks trying to sign Cesc Fabregas? Well, either way the story claims United’s boss is after a midfield general instead.
Given United’s lack of spark in midfield for a number of seasons, you would think a play-maker would be a necessity. And in truth it probably is. With no quotes to back up the claims it seems this is just another article to pass the time until the real football starts...much like this one.
The Mail also claims United are increasingly confident of signing Marouane Fellaini – something of a midfield general himself. Surely one story wasn’t written purely to back up the other?
They then go on to fill the article with quotes from Roberto Martinez saying Fellaini is likely to remain exactly where he is.
And finally, Alex Buttner is reportedly a loan target for both Benfica and Besiktas.
