Pre-season has harboured so much hope for Arsenal this season. That culminated with a stunning 3-1 victory over Manchester City in Helsinki - but that scoreline has come back to haunt them on the opening day of the Premier League season.
When Olivier Giroud gave them the lead early on Arsenal fans would have been wondering what all the fuss was about, we will be fine this season.
What happened next was embarrassing. The referee didn’t help matters, with the second penalty and sending off for Laurent Koscielny dubious - but then again Wojciech Szczesny could have received his marching orders for the first Aston Villa penalty, although it would have been harsh.
Aston Villa ended up winning the game 3-1, with goals from Christian Benteke (2) and Antonio Luna proving enough to send Arsenal toward a crushing opening day defeat.
The magnitude of the result was compounded by the injury problems suffered in the game, Bacary Sagna and Kieran Gibbs both suffering injuries after aerial challenges.
With Nacho Monreal and Thomas Vermaelen out, Andre Santos and Jernade Meade allowed to leave this summer and Ignasi Miquel out on loan - who plays left-back in their next game is now up for debate.
The club have signed just one player this summer in the form of Yaya Sanogo and let an entire squad load of players go - with more set to follow. Despite the promise of big spending, the club has failed to sign any of the star targets they have highlighted. The most recent one to choose elsewhere, as Arsenal dawdled over his price-tag, was Luiz Gustavo. While he was starring on his debut for VfL Wolfsburg The Gunners could have done with him - as Mikel Arteta sat out the first of many games.
The end result was Arsenal players trundling off to a chorus of ‘boos’ and ‘spend your money’ - after just 90 minutes of the season the fans appear to have already had enough.
One fan in particular made his views very clear. Piers Morgan may not always speak for the majority of fans, but his sentiment on Twitter was one shared by most of the Gunners faithful in the Twitterverse.
Here are some of his Tweets...
This Arsenal team will be lucky to come 6th, based on this performance. Just the harsh, obvious reality. #afc— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) August 17, 2013
Here's the only transfer business I now want: WENGER OUT. #Arsenal— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) August 17, 2013
Do you agree with Morgan?
