With the end of the transfer window less than three weeks away, Manchester united are still no closer to signing the top class central midfielder their team needs, and with just as much speculation about outgoings at their club as incomings, their fans have every reason to be frustrated.
However they could turn one of their unsettled players to their advantage, and there has already been rumours that Nani could act as a makeweight in a deal for Roma’s Erik Lamela.
Although Lamela is an excellent young player, Manchester United already have enough cover on the wings even with Nani departing, and if Roma are happy to involve players in a deal for Nani then David Moyes should be looking at Miralem Pjanic instead.
The 23-year-old midfielder have many of the qualities that Manchester United need in their midfield. Pjanic is creative, comfortable on the ball and able to keep play ticking over with short passes in the final third.
Pjanic does have a reputation for inconsistency, but at 23 he has plenty of time to hone his craft, and when on form he would be an excellent addition to United’s midfield.
Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for the Bosnian over the past year as a possible replacement for Luka Modric, and with the London club having discussions with Roma recently about both Pjanic and Lamela, it would indicate that he might be available if Manchester United were to step up their interest.
David Moyes is clearly attempting to buy from the very top bracket to improve his midfield, having missed out on Cesc Fabregas and Thiago Alcantara. However at this stage of the transfer window that will become almost impossible, and rumoured interest in Mesut Ozil and Luka Modric is unlikely to lead anywhere.
Pjanic is a more attainable target, and someone who would certainly be an improvement on their current options, and Manchester United should use Nani to try and lure the Bosnian to Old Trafford.
